« Smile Has The Death » is the last opus from Cyril Lepizzera. I had reviewed in their times Cyril’s previous albums, albums that I had appreciated. Cyril is a talented French guitar player who knows at the same time be technique and keep a melodic sense to the tracks he create. In each of his albums, Cyril gives us a different style and this one is rather in gothic metal style. I admit being sceptic on this last album… not on the level of the compositions at properly speaking. They are good tracks with very well done guitar passages and soli which are also well done, technique and melodic at the same time. The songs are powerful, heavy and melodic at the same time, no the problem does not come from the music, the style but comes from the vocals… the male vocals are more or less well done depending on the tracks, maybe are they lacking of some power and aggressiveness, but the female vocals… I have the feeling that they absolutely do not go with the tracks, you’ll just have to hear « The Casile Of The White Shadow » !!! Of course Ellen has a superb high pitched lyric voice but I have the impression that she sings wrong or at least that she is not in phase with the tracks… it becomes irritating along the listenings…Fortunately she doesn’t sing in all the songs… Musically I really like it !!! I like these melodies at the same time powerful and melodic with this present gothic side and the all goes pretty well without the vocals. Some passages at guitars are just simply supber and much well done, full of feelings like especially the intro of
« Smile has The death » but in each of the tracks has these melodic and technique passages like knows to do it Cyric, with changings in rhythm which show the progression of the songs like all specially in this same track « Smile Has Death ». It is in such tracks as « No Escape From Hell Part I » that we’ll find the shredder that is Cyril but also the guitarist who knows to give feelings to his guitar… « La Grande Sarabande In D Minor » from Haendel is jsut simply magnificent, with a lot of feeling in the guitars.
I just can recommend you this album if you are fans of guitars because as usual Cyril gives us a superb work and superb guitars playing… I let aside the vocals.
